Vermont voters appear to be divided on the question of consolidating schools.

The VPR Vermont Poll found that 45 percent of support a plan to reduce the number of school districts in the state from 278 to 45, even if that means closing small schools.

Thirty-six percent opposed the idea, and 19 percent were undecided.

Republican gubernatorial candidate Brian Dubie supporters seem to support the idea: 57 percent of likely Dubie voters support consolidating school districts.

Democratic candidate Peter Shumlin has said he favors consolidation, if approved by local voters. But his supporters split on the idea: 42 percent oppose school consolidation, 35 percent support it, and 23 percent are undecided.

The poll of 625 likely voters by Mason-Dixon Polling and Research had a margin of error of plus or minus four percentage points.
