The town of Rockingham is going out to bid for bridge repairs, and holding a series of community meetings to discuss options for the historic Bartonsville Bridge, three weeks after Tropical Storm Irene swept it down river.
Rockingham’s select board estimates that a temporary bridge for Bartonsville will cost roughly $150,000 to $180,000.
It’s unclear if that cost would be reimbursed through FEMA.
Many residents who have an affinity for covered bridges say the Bartonsville Bridge should remain a priority in Irene’s aftermath.
Town officials say they want to build a new bridge on land, and then place it on the old abutments.
