Attorney General Won’t Prosecute Democrats’ Complaint

Vermont’s attorney general says he didn’t find enough evidence to support allegations that Republican gubernatorial candidate Brian Dubie and the Republican Governors Association coordinated the filming of a TV commercial on Dubie’s behalf, in violation of campaign finance laws that restrict media buys by outside parties.

Attorney General William Sorrell said Wednesday his office investigated a September 9th complaint by Vermont Democrats that Dubie and the RGA had coordinated on the "Vision for Vermont" ad. He says the complaint was a serious matter but that there was insufficient evidence to warrant enforcement action.

Now, Dubie’s campaign wants Democratic candidate Peter Shumlin to reimburse the state for the money spent looking into the complaint, which Dubie’s camp says led to misuse of public resources.
