Asbestos Mine To Reopen After Loan From Quebec Government

Last week, the Quebec government of premier Jean Charest announced that it would extend a $58 million loan to Balcorp, a Montreal company that owns the Jeffrey Asbestos Mine. The mine is located in the town of Asbestos in the Eastern Provinces of Quebec. It has been closed since November. Montreal Gazette Environmental Reporter Monique Beaudin has been following the story, and provides some insight into the government’s decision to back this loan, and to local reaction.
