About a third of Vermont voters appear to support a single-payer health care system, similar to Medicare.

The VPR Vermont Poll found that 34 percent of voters support a government financed health care system.

The poll found that 26 percent supported continuing to rely on employer-based private insurance.

The poll of 625 registered, likely voters was conducted last week by Mason-Dixon Polling and Research. It has a margin of error of plus or minus four percentage points.

Opinions on health care seem to be helping to shape the governors race.

The VPR Vermont Poll found that, of the people who support a government-financed system, 58 percent support Peter Shumlin and only six percent back Brian Dubie.

Of the people who support private health insurance, 51 percent are Dubie supporters and eight percent are behind Shumlin.
