Vermont will get $6.7 million in federal stimulus money to weatherize more than 1,800 homes.

The state’s three-member congressional delegation says the grants will help cut energy costs, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create jobs.

The funding will be available to families making up to 200 percent of the federal poverty level or about $44,000 a year to make their homes more energy efficient.

Up to 20 percent of the funding may be used for job training.

The delegation says homeowners save an average of 32 percent in heating costs and hundreds of dollars year in overall energy expenses after weatherizing their homes.

If the program is successful, Vermont will receive over $8 million more.
