As we recognize veterans who have served in combat throughout our nation’s history, still more men and women become veterans as they cycle in and out of Afghanistan in our ongoing mission there.

This month, thirty Air Guard members departed Vermont for a mission in Afghanistan providing what the Guard says is "engineering support to maintain airfield operations to ensure adequate launch and recovery of coalition aircraft." They’ll also have a secondary mission maintaining and repairing some facilities during their time in-country, which is expected to last at least six months.

Colonel Michael Morgan is with the 158th Fighter Wing of the Vermont Air National Guard. He spoke with Vermont Edition about the deployment.
