Towns to vote on Vermont Yankee

It’s not up to them, but voters around Vermont will voice their opinions come Town Meeting Day on whether Vermont Yankee nuclear plant should stay open.

At least 40 communities are planning votes in March, and organizer Bob Bady of Brattleboro expects more towns to take up the issue at the end of their meetings.

The nonbinding resolution calls for Entergy Nuclear to fully fund the plant’s decommissioning fund, which contains only one-third of the money needed to close and clean up the reactor.

Last spring, Gov. Jim Douglas vetoed a similar measure, saying it was anti-business and would increase power costs.
