These days would-be auctioneers can go to big schools out West to specialize in cattle auctions, estate sales, or car auctions. And they also practice that instantly recognizable fast-paced banter unique to the auctioneer.
Tom Broughton learned the old fashioned way-in a kind of apprenticeship as a runner: bringing items up for bid and listening to the vocal skills of his boss. Now he runs his own auction barn in Bridport and VPR’s Jane Lindholm stopped by for a tutorial.
