The student government at the University of Vermont wants school officials to reconsider their decision to eliminate varsity baseball and softball.

The school has decided to do away with the programs because of a projected million dollar shortfall in next year’s athletic budget.

In a 40-0 vote with two abstentions, the Student Government Association voted to ask athletic director Robert Corran and university officials to reconsider.

Corran says three other scenarios were considered before they were rejected in favor of eliminating baseball and softball.

Megan Benay of Fairfax is the vice co-chairwoman of the SGA finance committee. She says the potential loss of baseball and softball will have a serious impact on funding of student clubs.
