State tries to block Williams from using insanity defense

A judge says he’ll decide next week whether a school shooting suspect can use an insanity defense when he goes to trial July 7.

The state wants to block 29-year-old Christopher Williams from claiming he was insane or suffered from diminished mental capacity during the Aug. 24, 2006 shooting spree in Essex, which killed two people and wounded two others.

He’s charged with aggravated murder, first-degree murder and attempted murder.

Williams’ lawyers have no expert witnesses to testify to that effect, and prosecutors say there’s never been a case in which such a defense was used without an expert to back it up.
