Vermont Emergency Management officials say about 50,000 homes and businesses were without power after the floods from Tropical Storm Irene.

It could be days before it’s restored.

Crews were working to restore the electricity. But they were hampered by the widespread flooding across the state, and by road and bridge washouts.

Some of the outages were caused by trees and limbs that came down on wires.

But others resulted from poles being washed away by floodwaters.

Utilities say they were awaiting dawn to conduct a better assessment of the damage and the work required to repair it.
