The loser of Vermont’s Progressive Party primary for governor says she’ll run as an independent write-in candidate in the general election.

Annette Smith, of Danby, is head of the group "Vermonters for a Clean Environment." She says she wants to push her message of challenging the power of corporations to determine Vermont’s future.

Smith lost the Progressive primary to party Chairwoman Martha Abbott after a recount. Abbott has withdrawn from the race and thrown her support behind Governor Shumlin.

Smith will be running against Democratic incumbent Governor Peter Shumlin, Republican Randy Brock, independent Emily Peyton, and two minor-party candidates.
