Shaftsbury officials are trying to decide if the community should become host to the state’s next corrections work camp.
A town committee has visited the existing work camp in St. Johnsbury.
Select Board Chairman Wynn Metcalfe says a lot of work remains to be done because the camp could have a huge impact on the town.
The Vermont Corrections Department is looking for a location for a new work camp and would like to build it in southern Vermont.
Metcalfe says one of the biggest questions is whether there’s an appropriate 10-acre parcel of land in Shaftsbury to host the camp.
