General Electric Aviation of Rutland has been awarded an $8 million U.S. Navy contract for the development and production of fighter engines for warfare aircraft.

The contract is for the EA-18G Growler aircraft, which accompanies U.S. fighter bombers on missions and protectively jams enemy radar, destroying them with missiles along the way.

The Rutland plant employs about 1,100 people.

The Rutland plant is one of several GE plants dividing up a $67 million contract for the work.

Sen. Patrick Leahy announced the contract award Thursday.
