Racine hits Douglas on ‘public option’

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Doug Racine is criticizing Governor Jim Douglas over the incumbent Republican’s opposition to a so-called public option as part of federal health care reform.

Douglas has spoken out against proposals for a government-run health insurance program to compete with those offered by private firms. The governor points to Vermont health programs that are state-subsidized but administered by private insurers.

Racine is a state senator from Chittenden County and chairman of the Health and Welfare Committee in the Vermont Senate. He says the public option is key to bringing about real health care reform at the national level.

Racine calls Douglas out of step on the issue.
