Middlebury police say a man who said he wanted to commit "suicide by cop," was struck by two bullets fired by police officers during an extended gunfight.

At first police said they didn’t know if 57-year-old George Demarais was killed by a police bullet or if he shot himself in a wooded area behind his home last week.

Middlebury Police Chief Tom Hanley told the Burlington Free Press on Monday that the medical examiner said there were two gunshot wounds and they were not self-inflicted.

Hanley said Demarais had planned for the shootout for weeks.
