With five candidates in the gubernatorial race and Legislature now adjourned, campaigning is underway in earnest. All this month on Vermont Edition, we’ll be interviewing the candidates vying for the major party nominations for governor.

Today: Democrat Peter Shumlin, the president pro tempore of the Vermont Senate.

Shumlin served in the Vermont House beginning in 1990.  He moved over to the Senate in 1993, where he served for 10 years, many of them as President pro tem, before launching an unsuccessful bid for lieutenant governor.  He returned to the Senate in 2006 and has been President Pro Tem ever since.

He spoke with VPR’s Jane Lindholm about his candidacy.
