Lawyer: Doctor’s reputation unfairly ruined

The lawyer for the Burlington eye doctor found guilty of unprofessional conduct with 10 patients says his client’s reputation has been tarnished unfairly.

That reaction from Jeffrey Behm followed yesterday’s announcement by the Vermont Medical Practice Board in the case of Doctor David Chase.

The board found Chase — who has retired from his ophthalmology practice — guilty of 21 counts of unprofessional conduct.

The charges stemmed from allegations that Chase had performed unnecessary cataract surgeries on patients.

The board’s decision comes two years after Chase was found not guilty in federal court of defrauding health insurance programs by billing for the treatments.
