A judge says the man charged with killing a University of Vermont student in October 2006 must keep his defense attorney.

Vermont District Court Judge Michael Kupersmith has rejected the request by defense attorney David Sleigh to no longer represent Brian Rooney.

Sleigh asked Kupersmith to be removed from the case because Rooney has recently filed legal papers on his own and Rooney has complained about Sleigh’s representation.

The 37-year-old Rooney has pleaded not guilty to a charge he killed UVM student Michelle Gardner-Quinn.

Rooney’s trial is set to begin May 13 in Rutland.
