Judge grants new competency hearing for Essex shooting suspect

The man suspected of killing two and wounding two others during a 2006 shooting in Essex will get a new competency evaluation before his trial, scheduled for next month.

Yesterday Judge Geoffrey Crawford dropped an aggravated murder charge against 29-year-old Christopher Williams because the case against him didn’t meet the legal requirements for the charge.

Instead, prosecutors say they’ll reinstate a first-degree murder charge against Williams.

Police say Williams went on the shooting rampage after breaking up with a girlfriend.

Williams’ lawyers sought the new evaluation after Williams wrote letters to the court saying he had visions. Prosecutors call it a delaying tactic.
