Astrid Helena Nicolay has always felt an affinity for animals. It probably comes from how much she moved around as a young child-from Venezuela to Sweden to Colombia to Panama, et cetera. She says it was easier to seek the companionship of animals than to make and then have to say goodbye to human friends.
Her love of animals has taken an interesting twist in the last several years, as Nicolay and her husband have come to share their lives with… squirrels. Nicolay is a certified squirrel rehabilitator and she’s just written a book about living with and caring for the little critters, called "The Squirrel Diaries: Tales from a Wildlife Rehabilitator." Recently, VPR’s Jane Lindholm sat down for a chat at Nicolay’s home in Monkton.
