The Vermont Department of Fish & Wildlife Department is urging drivers to be extra cautious to avoid moose on the highways in the next few weeks.

It’s breeding season for moose and the animals are on the move.

Moose are more likely to be crossing roadways, especially after dark or early in the morning.

Officials say nine moose have been hit since Saturday.

A number of areas to be especially vigilant are Interstate 89 between Bolton and Montpelier, Vermont Route 12 from Worcester to Elmore and Interstate 91 at Sheffield heights.

Since 1985, 14 people have been killed in motor vehicle collisions with moose on Vermont highways.
