Budget squabbles intensify at Vt. Statehouse

With debates over sex crimes and gay marriage behind them, lawmakers are turning their attention during the final scheduled weeks of their 2009 session to money.

The Senate Transportation Committee on Tuesday approved a 2 percent wholesale tax at gasoline, expected to add about 3 cents to the current cost of a gallon, just one of several pieces of a fiscal puzzle giving headaches to the lawmakers and the administration of Gov. Jim Douglas.

Meanwhile, the Democratic-controlled Legislature and the Republican governor’s aides are continuing to debate taxing and spending policy.
