With debates
over sex crimes and gay marriage behind them, lawmakers are turning their
attention during the final scheduled weeks of their 2009 session to money.
During the four-hour debate on the bill, House
members reaffirmed their support for increasing the gas tax by
five-cents-per-gallon to finance the bond.
Senator Bernie Sanders has unveiled a plan to
significantly lower gas prices for the rest of the year.
Sanders wants to suspend
both the federal and the state gas tax for the next 6 months – he says he’ll pay
for his plan by imposing a windfall profits tax on the major oil companies.
