Back Paychecks Going To Vt. Contract Workers

Checks averaging about $4,000 are going out to about 700 Vermont contract workers of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Senator Bernie Sanders says employees of Stanley Incorporated and its subcontractors are to receive their checks by June 6.

The $2.9 million being distributed to the workers is the third round of back-pay awards involving government contractors in St. Albans and Essex Junction.

Another $3 million went to about 500 workers in two other settlements in 2009.

Sanders says he asked the U.S. Labor Department investigation underpayments in 2007 after new contractors at the center docked pay for longtime workers and gave some employees new titles for the same jobs.
