Officials at the United Way of Chittenden County say they really appreciate all the energy and enthusiasm shown by volunteers around the holidays.

But they’d love it even more if that same spirit could be extended throughout the year.

Bobby Maynes, communications director for the agency, says the holidays bring a burst of volunteerism, with celebrations for single parents and the Polar Express event held each winter among the results.

The Corporation for National and Community Service says Vermont has the Northeast’s highest, and the nation’s ninth-highest, rate of volunteerism.
