Vermont’s modern artisan’s movement began in the 1960s, when crafts people sold their wares from wobbly card tables at makeshift craft fairs.
Today crafts are sold from artisan’s studios, at craft cooperatives and at juried fairs, by artists who are keenly aware of the importance of marketing and advertising.
We talk with Martha Fitch, Executive Director of the Vermont Crafts Council and Anne
Majusiak, curator for the State Of Craft Exhibit at the Bennington
Museum
about how Vermont’s professional craft community has evolved, how artisans have kept up with changing public tastes, and the impact of the economy on the craft market.
