A federal appeals court Thursday declared
that the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutionally denies federal
benefits to married gay couples, a groundbreaking ruling all but certain
to wind up before the U.S. Supreme Court.
A federal appeals court on Tuesday declared California’s
same-sex marriage ban to be unconstitutional, putting the bitterly
contested, voter-approved law on track for likely consideration by the
U.S. Supreme Court.
Governor Peter Shumlin
announced Tuesday that he’s tapped Attorney Beth Robinson, who argued the state’s civil union case, to fill a vacancy
created when Justice Denise Johnson announced her retirement.
Peter Shumlin will travel to Rhode Island to lend his
support to an effort there to pass a same sex marriage law. He says his message is simple – it’s the right thing to do, and there’s not a lot
of political fall out from supporting the bill.
