Vermont
Gas has changed the route of the proposed extension of its natural gas pipeline
through Addison County. The
company filed a petition last year for a state permit to build a 42-mile
pipeline from Colchester to Middlebury.
Rutland Mayor Christopher Louras faces stiff
opposition from well-known challenger for the city’s top job. While the campaign has been relatively quiet,
public safety and the city’s drug problem have emerged as a top issues in a
race that will be decided on Town Meeting Day.
The
downtown of Springfield continues to recover after a fire hit the Ellis block
in 2008. The building contained apartments as well as the movie
theater. Now
the Select Board is taking measures to help the operators of the theater.
Like some other small dams in
Vermont, the dam on Lake Fairlee is old and in need of repair. It’s privately owned,
but a three-town committee has been exploring ways to repair or replace it.
An iconic Brattleboro building that was gutted by fire two years ago is
moving closer to making a comeback. Since 2011 the historic
Brooks House and its many storefronts and apartments have been a dark spot on Brattleboro’s Main Street.
The
state is encouraging towns throughout Vermont to bring their land use plans in line with regional
plans. In
some cases that means changing local zoning districts. One goal is to prevent
strip development in rural areas.
Berlin voters will weigh in next week on whether the town
should borrow $5.5 million to create a municipal water system to serve
the Four Corners area of town.
