A nuclear watchdog and a veteran nuclear industry executive have been named to a state panel examining whether Vermont Yankee gets the OK to remain open another 20 years.

David Lochbaum, director of the nuclear safety project for the Union of Concerned Scientists, and Fred Sears, director of the Radiation Science and Engineering Center at Pennsylvania State University, were named to the Public Oversight Panel on Thursday.

The panel was established to report to the Vermont Legislature on Vermont Yankee’s request to obtain an extension of its operating license, currently set to expire March 21, 2012.
