Wright asks for recount in Burlington mayoral race

The Republican candidate who lost the race to become mayor of Burlington in the third round of the city’s instant runoff voting system is asking for a recount.

Kurt Wright was leading after the first two rounds of vote counting on Town Meeting Day, but lost in the third round when incumbent Progressive Mayor Bob Kiss crossed the 50 percent vote threshold.

Wright says he doesn’t expect the recount to change the results, but he says it’s an opportunity to take another look at the system.

Under the instant runoff system, voters rank their choices instead of selecting a single candidate.

Wright says he’s not going to lead a movement against the system.
