A 74-year-old woman convicted in the bludgeoning death of her husband of 43 years wants a new trial.

An attorney for Hope Schreiner of Townshend told the Vermont Supreme Court yesterday that the trial court in her case should have considered evidence that someone else killed her husband, 78-year-old Robert Schreiner more than three years ago.

The judge who heard the trial last year said Schreiner’s claim had no merit.

Schreiner says she found her husband’s body in their driveway after returning home from a morning of running errands. She is serving a sentence of 17 years to life in prison.
