Without contract, Yankee vote off table

Legislative leaders want to know what Vermont Yankee will charge utilities for electricity before they vote on whether to extend its operating license another 20 years.

So far, plant owner Entergy Nuclear has declined to give utilities a contract for power sold after 2012, when the plant’s license expires. Senate President Peter Shumlin and House Speaker Shap Smith gave Entergy until yesterday to come up with a deal, but the company refused.

Without one, Smith says, a vote on Yankee’s future is out of the question in this year’s session of the Vermont Legislature.
