Winter storm hits the state

The first big snowstorm of the season is in full swing and could dump eight to 14 inches of snow in parts of Vermont by tomorrow.

The National Weather Service forecasts the greatest amounts in mountain areas of central and northern Vermont.

The storm could include heavy snowfall at times and a mix of sleet in central and southern Vermont.

The storm is expected to wind down by midday today, but redevelop in the afternoon, particularly along the higher elevations of the Green Mountains.

Steady snow is forecast for tonight, tapering off to snow showers by tomorrow morning.

Scores of schools are closed and officials are warning drivers to be cautious while commuting.
