A spectacular fire destroyed a White River Junction landmark over the weekend.

The roundhouse, which dates to 1929, burned in a Sunday afternoon fire that sent thick, black smoke into the sky and could be seen by skiers on Killington Peak. No one was hurt.

About a dozen fire departments from Vermont and New Hampshire fought the blaze.

Hartford Fire Chief Steve Locke says there’s nothing to suggest the fire was suspicious in origin, but Vermont State Police fire marshals are expected to be on the scene Monday.
