Wet weather means more slugs

Vermont’s rainy summer is bringing out the slugs.

Complaints have been pouring into the University of Vermont’s plant diagnostic clinic.

Ann Hazelrigg, a plant pathologist at UVM, says it’s the rain, which is ideal for the crawly creatures.

Margaret Skinner, a research professor of entomology at the university, says she’s seen slugs "as big as highlighter markets" this summer.

Gardeners who want to rid their plots of them should encourage the presence of centipedes, toads, birds and other slug predators.
