An 800-acre marsh in West Rutland is making headlines among bird lovers as one of the top bird-watching hotspots in the country.

The magazine "Birders World" named the cattail marsh one of the 52 best spots in the country for watching birds.

The marsh was the only Vermont location to make the list.

At the marsh, birders can expect to see many waterfowl, rails and other wetland birds, including one of Vermont’s rarest birds, the least bittern.

Birders have documented 136 bird species within the cattails.

Marvin Elliot of the Rutland County Audubon Society says the marsh is a great place to watch birds because there are dirt roads around it and walking trails through it.
