A bill in Congress would expand the impact of a Vermont outreach program for veterans returning home from deployments to Afghanistan and elsewhere.

Congressman Peter Welch outlined the provisions of the legislation in Bennington yesterday. He says if it’s approved, the bill would expand the program’s reach to all 50 states.

The program sends outreach specialists door-to-door to help families get health care services, marriage and financial counseling, substance abuse treatment and other services.

It was started in 2006 with grant money obtained by Senator Bernie Sanders.
