Congressman Peter Welch is moving up in the House leadership in Washington.

He was appointed this morning as a chief deputy whip for the Democratic caucus.

The whip in the new Congress is Maryland Congressman Steny Hoyer. He is the second-ranking Democrat in the House.

He’s assisted by a team of other members who help to count votes and deliver the party’s message.

That’s the team that Welch joined this morning.
