Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger has appointed Eileen Blackwood City Attorney.

Blackwood has been in private practice since 1986, focusing in the fields of education and employment law and estate planning.

A graduate of Dartmouth College, she received her law degree from Cornell Law School where she was the managing editor of the Cornell Law Review. Blackwood was elected to serve as president of the Vermont Bar Association, and was appointed by the Chief Justice of the Vermont Supreme Court to serve on the Commission on Judicial Operation.

"The City of Burlington will be very fortunate to have an attorney of Eileen Blackwood’s caliber serving City Attorney," Weinberger sad in a statement. "Eileen has extensive experience, excellent skills as a listener and communicator, is one of the most respected and admired attorneys in the Vermont legal community, and has an outstanding record of community service."

Blackwood’s nomination faces a City Council vote next week.

Monday’s announcement marks Weinberger’s second effort to fill the post since April.
