Wal-Mart Planned For Derby

Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin says a Wal-Mart is planned on U.S. 5 in Derby.

Shumlin tells the Burlington Free Press the store is good news for an area that traditionally has suffered higher unemployment rates than the rest of the state. He said he’s hopeful it won’t be greeted with a lot of opposition.

A member of the Vermont Natural Resources Council said the council is concerned that the development is in the wrong scale in the wrong place and will undermine Newport City, one of many downtowns that the state has been working to revitalize.

Shumlin said the Wal-Mart store, which he said will bring some 300 jobs, has "huge support" in Newport and in surrounding communities.
