(Host) A well-known figure in Vermont’s music scene is headed for a new position.

Troy Peters is music director of the Vermont Youth Orchestra and conductor of the Middlebury College Orchestra.  He’s just been appointed music director of the Youth Orchestras of San Antonio, Texas.

Peters has been honored with many awards, including the 2005 declaration by Governor Jim Douglas of Troy Peters’ Day.  But Peters says the most remarkable moment of his time here was the V-Y-O concert at Carnegie Hall in 2004.

(Peters) "We brought a program of music by Vermont classical composers and also Trey Anastasio from Phish and performed to a huge crowd.  The kids felt like rock stars and we made a mark on the cultural landscape, not only of Vermont, but of the larger orchestral scene in America."

(Host) In Texas, Peters will continue to bring the joys of classical music to young people.

(Peters) "That experience of helping a teenager fall in love with great music-to discover a Beethoven symphony or a Brahms symphony or the music of Aaron Copland for the first time-is the most exciting thing that I do.  So it’s something that I’m going to continue doing throughout my career."

(Host) Peters begins his new job in San Antonio in mid-August.  Before he departs, the Vermont Youth Orchestra will perform a composition he wrote for the Lake Champlain Quadricentennial – as well as touring Quebec and France.
