VT Yankee passes emergency drill

Vermont Yankee has passed an emergency drill, but some area residents still are not happy with evacuation plans in the event of a true crisis at the nuclear power plant.

Vermont Emergency Management officials staged a “fast-breaker” drill yesterday that simulated an emergency.

Officials say plant operators would have met regulations calling for the public to be notified within 15 minutes of the emergency being declared.

Some residents are complaining about the state’s evacuation plan, calling for thousands to be relocated to Bellows Falls Union High School in an emergency.

They say local roads would be gridlocked by people fleeing.

There also have been complaints that emergency radios issued to local residents are ignored or unplugged because they broadcast so many weather warnings.
