The state of Vermont is using new high-tech equipment on Interstate 89 that it hopes will save lives and money.

Between Burlington and Bethel the Agency of Transportation has installed five towers with sensors to detect weather conditions.

The information allows AOT crews to anticipate storms and gear their response to the storms’ severity.

Along with the towers are a dozen message boards to notify drivers of current road conditions.

The state expects the technology to save up to 10 percent of road maintenance costs and make the highway safer.
