A Vermont soldier killed in Iraq is being remembered as someone whose primary goal since childhood was to protect others.
Family, friends, and colleagues gathered Monday for the funeral for 22-year-old 2nd Lt. Joseph Fortin, of St. Johnsbury.
One of Fortin’s teachers recalled a boy who wanted to be a superhero, saying he answered the call of his country by joining the military.
Fortin’s father remembered his son as a soldier willing to give his life to protect others.
Fortin was killed last week when an improvised explosive device hit the vehicle he was riding in near Baghdad.
