Vermont’s two US senators split today on the sweeping changes proposed to Medicare.

Independent Senator Jim Jeffords voted for the 395 (B) billion dollar plan. Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy opposed it.

The bill won final congressional approval today with a 54-to-46 vote in the Senate. President Bush has vowed to sign it into law.

The bill has been described as the most sweeping change to Medicare since its creation in 1965.
