(Host) Vermont’s two U.S. senators say they’re concerned about the stability of Pakistan after the assassination of Benazir Bhutto.

Senator Patrick Leahy says that while Bhutto may have had her flaws, she would have been key in restoring democracy to Pakistan.

(Leahy) "She may have been the best hope for a democratic change in Pakistan. It’s been a real mistake in supporting Musharraf unconditionally as the United States has for years because he has basically used our support to build himself into a dictator and to maintain that dictatorship.”

(Host) Bhutto was killed in a suicide attack after a campaign rally.

Leahy and Senator Bernie Sanders both called on the Bush administration to use diplomatic pressure in Pakistan.

They say the United States can help persuade President Pervez Musharraf to restore constitutional government.
