Vt. schools looking at budget cuts

Declining enrollments and state cost-control laws are prompting school districts around Vermont to contemplate what some are calling dramatic budget cuts, with staff reductions and program eliminations announced or under review.

Teacher layoffs already have been announced at Otter Valley Union High School in Brandon, Middlebury Union High School, Spaulding High School in Barre and Barre Town schools.

School boards are trying to avoid penalties on high-spending districts imposed under a 2003 law known as Act 68, as well as avoiding a more recent provision requiring residents to vote twice on budgets that grow faster than a set level.

Technical education and French are on the chopping block in Brandon, while Spaulding is planning on six fewer teaching and special education positions.
