Enrollment in Vermont’s public schools is down for the 13th straight year.

The state has released its annual school enrollment report, and it shows the number of students decreased last year by 1.64 percent, falling from just over 94,000 to just over 92,500.

Public schools in Vermont have lost nearly 13 percent of their students since a high of more than 106,000 in 1997.

State Department of Education spokeswoman Jill Remick says with recent reports showing Vermont with one of the lowest birth rates in the country, it could be some time before the number of students reverses.
